Lithium

One of my favorite grunge song. Written by our beloved late Kurt Cobain, it successfully peaked at number 64 in the United States. It was featured in the second album Nevermind (1991) on the 5th track.

"Lithium" is representative of the musical style Nirvana had developed during work on Nevermind, alternating between quiet and loud sections. During the choruses, Cobain adds distortion to his guitar while he sings variations on the word "yeah". After the second chorus, the band plays a bridge section where Cobain sings several lines that end with the lyrics "I'm not gonna crack". After a brief bass interlude, the band ends the song with third verse, chorus, and bridge section.
Nirvana biographer Michael Azerrad described the song's title as a reference to Karl Marx's statement that religion is the "opiate of the masses". Cobain said the song is about a man who, after the death of his girlfriend, turns to religion "as a last resort to keep himself alive. To keep him from suicide". While Cobain said the narrative of "Lithium" was fictional, he said, "I did infuse some of my personal experiences, like breaking up with girlfriends and having bad relationships". Cobain acknowledged that the song was possibly inspired in part by the time he spent living with his friend Jesse Reed and his born-again Christian parents. He explained to Azerrad, "I've always felt that some people should have religion in their lives [. . .] That's fine. If it's going to save someone, it's okay. And the person in ['Lithium'] needed it."

I don't get it that much from the lyric (well, who actually gets that much from Kurt's writings?), for me it is all about mental breakdown that is experienced by a man because of love. Well, Lithium doesn't need understanding. Enjoyable for a grunge genre--and pretty much as depressed as you can see. It's a masterpiece of Nirvana that lives forever in our ears.

O hai there you guys!
So this is my very first blog dedicated to music. Actually I'm not that into music (well I guess because I'm into a lot of things equally, like books, drawings, paintings, theatrical plays, circus shows, sculptures, food, most likely everything) in real life. I'm not really an artist too, I'd love to call myself an amateur art appreciator. This blog purely contains my own thoughts towards what I hear. It's basically just the art from the collaboration of my ear and my brain. Feel free to read and comment, I welcome any critics. Hates are welcome (because loves are too mainstream, lol). Enjoy!
